Question: What is hosting? What is a server?

Answer: Websites are saved html (or .asp .jsp etc.) files on a computer. That computer is ALWAYS on and has extensive software to allow 'surfers' i.e. the public to access the computer and the files on it. That computer is the 'server'. The company who has such computers is offering HOSTING services (such as LunarPages, JumpLine, iPower, etc.). An ISP - Internet Service Provider - on the other hand is a company that lets you connect your computer to the internet via dial-up/phone or a cable (such as NetZero, Earthlink, People PC, Verizon DSL, etc.). These companies may ALSO offer hosting service, sometimes it's even included. They often host thousands of websites, so they have many computers with enormous hard drives and that allow enormous traffic (you know, when you have a phone modem how long it takes to 'download' a site. now the server has the same issue on his end in 'uploading' the site to you - only the server is uploading thousands of sites simultaneously. You can get cheap hosting service for under $10, you can even get it free but they will put ads on EVERY page of your site, or you can get a good professional hosting plan (that has no downtime - because files are backed up on different computers and systems are updated and serviced accordingly, that allows you to have a lot of space to store you site, where your site can have lots of traffic/visitors, and more - usually costing around $50pm). Anne Stahl Design works with a hosting company, where we 'own' space and bandwidth, which we can 'resell' to you. Setting up a hosting plan and routing your domain name yourselves is a bit tricky and not always successful. If you decide to find your own hosting and domain service, we cannot give you free support and any problems you ask us to fix, will be charged hourly. All in all, if you sign-up for our service/maintenance plan - which includes all that - you also get updates and the time it takes to route your domain name to the server, which will work out a much more cost effective way for you.

Question: What is your website maintenance plan and how does it work?

Answer: For $50 a month you get:

Question: Can I update the website myself in the future?

Answer: Yes, you have full access to your site. If you are not familiar with HTML you may want to obtain a program that allows you to make updates without the knowledge of HTML (such as Macromedia's Contribute 3 which will work perfectly with your site, as it uses the same encoding as DreamWeaver, the software your site will be developed with). I can assist you with this or make any updates for you at my hourly rate of $75. I am not responsible for your updates nor any errors that may occur.

Question: I already have a domain name. What now?

Answer: No Problem. As long as you have full access (username and password) to your domain name, it can be routed to a new server.

Question: What if I want to sell from my site. E-commerce?
